Techniques of Active learning and their Implications

Introduction:
Active learning requirs deeper planning than simply leading students through a classroom behavior. All learning is active in the  sense of changing longmemory. Focusing on behaviour without lognition ignors “both the structures that onstitute human cognitive architecture to Rote –century. “Active learning is an alternate to Rote learning” Active learning techniques can be integrated into a lecture or any other classroom setting relatively easily. Even large classroom can involve learning activities beyond the traditional lecture formet.
Definition of Active Learning:
Active Learning is “anything that involves students in doing things and thinging about the things they are doing” (Bonwell &Eison, 1991)
Definition
Felder & Brent (2009) define Active learning as “anything course-related that all students in a class session are called upon to do other than simply watching, listening and taking notes.
Principles of Active Learning
§      Everyone can learn through active learning
§      students activity participated
§      Responsive environment
§     Line the students learn through participation they won’t forget.
Techniques of Active learning
        I.            Think – Pair – Share method
     II.            Buzz group
   III.            Group discussion
  IV.            Poster session
     V.            Role playing
VI.            ALM – Active Learning methodology
VII.            ABL – Active bared learning

i) Think – Pair- share method
It is an active learning lethodology in which a common lope given to the students and students are allowed to think (study) independently. In the next step the students are paired with one another and oppourtunity is given for them to share their own clears.
ii) Buzz group
It is an active learning methodology in which four on given students discus about the course related questions.
iii) Group discussion
In this method the studs are divided in to various rub groups. In each group discuss shore and deflect their clears comes to a conclusion
iv. Poster session
It is an active learning methology by the research in ruler to present the topic before a forum the scholars display their findings, image and as pictorial representation.
v. Role playing
In this learning method individuals are given opportunities to enact characters. They pretend or act some one.
VI. ALM  (Active Learning Methodology)
ALM is a recent method impoemented by the state government of TN. This method is iplemented for sixthe, seventh and eight standard students. In order to make the students attentive in the class room this method is implemented.
The various steps followed in this method are
1)      Introduction
2)      Understandinf
3)      Consolidation
4)      Reinfircement
5)      Assessment
6)      Remedial work
7)      Mental picture / mind map
In the introduction stage the teacher introduce the lesson. In the next stage the student are allowed to sit in group and they olisucess about the introduced topic. If necessary the teacher with summarize all the major points and the sub points. Reinforcement is given often periodical evolution also taken place. If necessary if the student have any classification remedial teaching taken place. Finally the students are allowed to draw the mind map the major points and the sub points are connected with the help of lines are arrow.
ABL Method (Activity Based Learning)
This Method is implemented for I to Iv standard student. Yosh pal community has recommended to reduse the birden of his student. Hense in 2003 our Tamil Nadu state government implemented this ABL method are adapted from Rishi valley schools and Neibag schools. In this ABC method the learning task is divided in various learning cards are given for the students. For the first standard the color of the carrel red, second standard green, third standard blur, forth standard yellow. These words are kept in plastic trays. The black board is fixed at the at the bottom at the form walls. Various pictures, charts are displayed in the strings. More over weather chart is maintained health card is maintained. The students are allowed to sit in floor in various groups. There are six groups.
First and second groups are teacher depended group. the third group is partially teacher elepanded grou[, the forth group is peer elependent group. The fifth are in partially peer dependent group. Sixth groupis independent group
Lugos are given in learning cards. For example honeybee symbol denotes gathering information and the magic mirror symbol denotes filed trips, rainly symbols denotes the time to measure the whether report.
Phases of Active Learning techniques.
Active learning techniques has three phases, coresponding to the activities of learning.
I. The Anticipation Phase:-
·        Provide a context for understanding new ideas.
·        Fouse attentive on the topic
·        set purpose for learning
·        Informally assess what they already knew including misconceptions
·        Call up the knowledge students already have
     2. The Building knowledge Phase
·        Compare expetations with what is being learned
·        Revise expectations or ralse new ones
·        Identify the main points
·        monitor personal thinking
·        make inferences about the material
·        make personal connections to the lesson
·        Question the lesson
3. The consolidation phase
·        Summarize the main ideas Interpret the ideas
·        Share opinions
·        Make personal responses
·        Ask additional questions
·        assess learning
·        Test out the ideas
Educational implications for active learning
1)      Promoting research based learning through investigation and contains authentis scholorly content
2)      Encouraging leadership skills of the student through self-developemtn activities
3)      Creating atmosphere suitable for collaborative learning for building knowledge learning communities
4)      Cultivsting s dynamic environment through interdisiplinary learning and generating high profile activities for a better learning experience
5)      Intergration of prioe with new knowledge to incur a rich structure of knowledge among the students.
6)      Task based performance enhancement by giving the students a reaustic practical sense of the subject matter learnt in the classroom
Conclusion
Active learning implies the desired activity is obsetvable. with all of us have experience learning by being activity engaged in lectures, through our outward the learner who decides their level of learning activity, through thoughful consideration or note-taking . The key to active learning is the learning rather taking place within the students brain rather than the observed behaviour that is a means to that cognitive work
